Send by SMTP

Updated 2026-10-15

SMTP is the standard way an email program sends mail. If your mailbox isn't Gmail, or you'd rather not connect Google, you can give Bilketa your mailbox's SMTP settings. Orders then leave from your address, and suppliers reply to you as usual.

Your provider publishes these settings, often under "email client settings" or "Outlook / Thunderbird setup". Guides for some providers:

The fields

Field What to enter
Server (host) The outgoing (SMTP) server name from your provider, e.g. smtp.example.com.
Port Usually 465 with SSL/TLS or 587 with STARTTLS. Use what your provider lists.
Security SSL/TLS (encrypted from the start, normally port 465) or STARTTLS (switches to encryption, normally port 587). It must match the port.
Username Usually your full email address, not only the part before @.
Password Your mailbox password, or better an app password if your provider offers one.
From address The address suppliers see and reply to. Normally the same mailbox as the username.

Bilketa only connects with encryption; it never sends your password over an unencrypted connection.

App passwords

Many providers let you create a separate password for one program (an "app password" or "application password"). Use one if you can: it works only for sending and receiving mail, you can withdraw it at any time without changing your main password, and some providers (Gmail among them) don't accept the main password from other programs at all.

Test send

Before saving, Bilketa sends a short test email from your mailbox to your own address. The connection is accepted only when the test succeeds. If it fails, check the server, port and security first (the server couldn't be reached), then the username and password (the server refused the login).

A copy of each order

Sending by SMTP does not put a copy in your mailbox's Sent folder. Bilketa therefore sends you a hidden copy (BCC) of each order, so your mailbox still holds what was sent. You can turn this off.

Your password is safe

  • The password is stored encrypted and is never shown again, not even to you. To change it, enter a new one.
  • Bilketa only sends with it. It never reads, moves or deletes mail in your mailbox.
  • Every order is a draft first; nothing leaves until you confirm it.

If something here doesn't match what your provider shows, follow your provider: check your provider's panel or ask their support.
